Fixing The Leak: The Path to Creating Wealth

Find where the money already goes before you try to earn more.

· Budgeting

Imagine someone trying to fill a bucket with water. They pour in a bucket after bucket, yet the water level never rises. They work harder, fetch more water and pour more water still water in the bucket is not filling up. After a while, they become frustrated and wonder why all their effort is producing so little.

Then someone points to the bottom of the bucket and say, “look! There is a leak”.

The problem was never the amount of water being poured in. The problem was the water was escaping faster than could be retained.

This is how life often works. A leak is anything that quietly drains away something valuable without us noticing immediately. A leaking roof slowly damages a house. A leaking pipe wastes thousands of gallons of water over time. A leaking tire gradually loses air until the vehicle can no longer move. Small leaks may seem harmless at first, but if left unattended, they eventually lead to major losses. The same principle applies to our lives. We can have good jobs that make us earn great income, successful businesses, valuable talents, and great opportunities, yet still fail to build wealth because of unseen leaks which are draining our resources. These leaks may have poor financial habits, uncontrolled spending, debts, lack of planning, wasted time or even missed opportunities.

Before we ask, “how can I create more wealth?” we should first ask, “where are the leaks in my life?”.

Like a wise builder who repairs a leak before filling a tank, a wise person first identifies and fixes the leaks that prevent lasting prosperity. Once those leaks are repaired, every dollar earned, every opportunity seized, and every investment made has a greater chance of producing lasting wealth.

What then are financial leaks?

Financial are as follows:

  • Spending more than you earn.
  • Impulse buying and unnecessary shopping.
  • Paying high interest debt.
  • Excessive entertainment expenses.
  • Not saving or investing regularly.
  • Poor budgeting and lack of financial planning.
  • Wasting time that can be used to learn valuable skills or earn you extra income.
  • Ignoring opportunities to grow your income.

There are, however, many practical ways to create wealth once we have identified and repaired the leaks in our financial lives, we are ready to build wealth.

Wealth creation is not an event; it is a process. It is built through consistence habits, wise decisions, patience, dedication and discipline. Many people believe that wealth is reserved for those with high incomes, but history has shown that many ordinary people have become financially secure by faithfully applying sound financial principles. following ‘five principles’ form the foundation of lasting wealth creation: –

  1. Budgeting: Giving every dollar a ‘purpose’.

A budget is simply a written plan for how you intend to use your income. Budgeting also helps identify unnecessary spending. Small daily expenses, such as frequent restaurant meals and impulse purchases may seem insignificant but can accumulate thousands of dollars each year. A wise budget reflects your values and your priorities. Every dollar should have an assignment before it is spent and tell your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.

An effective budget should include:

  • Housing, Food, Utility, Transportation,
  • Savings, Investments, Emergency Fund
  • Giving or charitable contributions
  • Entertainment and personal spending.
  • Savings: Paying Yourself First:

Savings is the habit of setting aside part of your income before spending on anything else. Many people save whatever is left at the end of the month. Wealth people often reverse that order. They save first and spend what remains. Savings develop discipline. It teaches patience and delayed gratification. It is important to note, it is not how much you earn that determines your future, it is how much you consistently keep. Even small amounts saved all the time can grow into substantial sums over time. Savings serve several important purposes such as:

  • Emergency expenses
  • Medical needs
  • Major purchases
  • Business opportunities
  • Education
  • Retirement.
  • Investing: Making Money Work for You

Saving protects money, Investing grows money. Money kept under the mattress remains the same. Money invested wisely has potential to multiply through growth and compounds. Investments, however, require knowledge and patience. Successful investors understand that wealth usually grows slowly over many years rather than overnight. Never invest in something you do not understand. Avoid schemes that promise unusually high returns with little or no risk. One of the greatest advantages in investing is compound growth. Earnings generate additional earnings, allowing wealth to increase faster over time. The earlier the person begins investing, the greater the long-term benefits. Examples of investments include:

  • Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, Index Funds
  • Real Estate, Businesses, Retirement accounts
  • Agriculture Projects, Education that increases earning potential
  • Increasing Your Income

This principle works on an understanding that, while increasing your income is important also to reduce expenses. Nevertheless, there is a limit to how much you can cut. There is much greater potential for increasing income. Many wealthy individuals have multiple sources of income rather than depending on only one salary. Diversifying income reduces financial risk and creates greater opportunities for wealth. Below are some of the ways to increase income:

  • Learning a new skill, Taking Part-Time Work, Starting a new business
  • Freelancing, Selling Products Online, Consulting, Teaching/Coaching
  • Farming, investing in rental property, creating digital products.
  • Developing Valuable Skills.

The world rewards value. Those who continually improve themselves often enjoy greater opportunities and higher incomes. Read books, attend seminars, take online courses, seek mentors and never stop learning until your physical body limits or stops you. Education should not stop after graduation as the saying goes; “If you stop learning, you stop growing”. Examples of valuable skills include:

  • Leadership, Communication, Financial Literacy, Writing
  • Computer Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Sales and Marketing
  • Project Management, Public Speaking, Photography,
  • Teaching, Business Management.
